At the A.G.M of the Yorkshire Rabbits Association Harrogate Section held at Oakdale Golf Club on the 6th of January 2009 Flaxby Park Golf and Country Club were elected as members for the forthcoming season.

They were drawn in Division "A" with Harrogate-Oakdake-Otley-Thirsk-Bedale-Pike Hills-Ripon Golf Clubs and will play in both the Summer and Winter Leagues.

Flaxby are delighted with this step forward for the club and will look forward to contributing to the success of the Harrogate Rabbits Association during the coming season.

We are delighted to announce that the NEW 9 HOLE COURSE is now complete and will be opening for play next season. This will give our members an even greater variety and offer new challenges. The new course is 5960 yards played twice and there will be opportunities to play from the 10th to 27th on occasions. There is a new plan of the 27 holes on the Clubhouse wall near the changing rooms.

Winter Work at Flaxby Park

The Park Course, which opened in July 2004, and is maturing year on year, is quickly becoming highly regarded throughout the region. The work being undertaken this year will benefit all members and visitor alike. New drainage has been installed in areas where the rainfall has shown it necessary. The woodland areas are to be cleared of brambles etc to encourage new growth in our young trees. The 8th hole is to have a stone wall built around the edge of the pond in front of the green which will enhance it as a feature hole.

The new East Course (9 hole) is being developed, weather permitting and is well on target to open in 2007. The shaping of the course has now finished and we are now topsoiling these areas. The Greens are being constructed to the highest standard (UAGA) and are now ready for the sand and peat mixture to be added followed by the special grass seed (creeping bent) to be sown in the Spring.

The tees are all constructed and are maturing over the winter months. The Bunkers are shaped and drained ready for the addition of sand. The majority of course drainage has been installed and will be completed in the Spring. The new course is going to be highly challenging with many risk/reward shots to encourage all levels of playing ability.

Rain Stops Play

Due to the extremely wet conditions this week we regretfully had to cancel the first of our scheduled monthly medals, which was due to take place on Saturday 1st April. The mid-week April medal is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 19th April. Members wishing to take part are welcome to sign up in the clubhouse.

The busy competition season will continue with the first qualifying round of the Flaxby Cup, which will be held on Sunday 9th April. Only a few spaces are remaining, so the competition looks set to be well supported.

As Head Greenkeeper I would like to welcome new and existing members to the upcoming season. The main course is beginning to mature. A few more years of tree growth and the plantations will be brought into play; the course will then take on a new challenge.

The new 16th Tee will be opening shortly. This will provide a new layout to the hole, bringing 'the beach' bunker into play for those of you who tend to slice the ball. The 2nd Championship tees are also to be re-constructed to bring the overall level of our tees to a higher standard. These changes and more on the way, will improve the course during its development, maximising its potential in the future.

The course drainage is an ongoing issue; however, this is improving all the time. Various drains have been laid throughout the year, e.g. behind the 1st green. Drainage improvements will continue to be undertaken, and this will improve the playability of the course each year.

The Academy Course is beginning to take shape, and you will begin to see this in the coming months. The tipping of materials (used for contouring) should finish this year, and the shaping of mounds/fairways will start to take shape. Water features, main irrigation, drainage channels, and several tees have already been constructed. This year we will continue to progress with the remainder of the course.

The staff are also improving year on year. Along with me, Paul Forrest was awarded an A1 Assessor Certificate. This will enable us to train apprentice greenkeepers. Andy Ashton will soon become a fully trained Greenkeeper having achieved high levels of success throughout his training. New staff are also showing an interest in becoming fully qualified Greenkeepers.

A wonderful day was had by all, with great weather and excellent golf. More than £3,000 was collected on behalf of Cancer Research UK, a fantastic effort by Judy Mattocks and her wonderful helpers, in memory of Judy's daughter Hayley.

From the Head Greenkeeper, February, 2005.

As Head Greenkeeper I would like to welcome new and existing members to the coming season.

This year we will be striving to improve the existing course and finish the construction of the driving range. We will also be looking ahead at the building of the Academy course. You may have already noticed some of the improvements taking place, such as the planting of feature trees, cedars, oaks, pines and alders: the continuous improvements to drainage. A new tee will be built at the 16th and will improve wear/drainage and size, providing a new layout for the hole. The changes will benefit the course itself and our members and guests. The work on the driving range is coming along to schedule, with the building and driving bays near completion. This will be a fantastic asset to the club.

I look forward to seeing you out on the course during the coming months.

Due to the severe frost and below freezing temperature on Sunday, the Yellow Peril Competition had to be abandoned. A new date has been set for the 12th December. The same tee times have been allocated for the new date.

Format: Teams consist of 4 players with the best 2 scores to count on each hole (Full Handicap).

Sounds easy!!!
Here's the twist...the yellow ball must count as one of the best scores. That means on each hole one player has the yellow ball and it must score !.

RULES

Player 1 has the yellow ball at holes 1,5,11,15
Player 2 has the yellow ball at holes 2,6,12,16
Player 3 has the yellow ball at holes 3,7,13,17
Player 4 has the yellow ball at holes 4,8,14,18

That leaves holes 9 & 10 with no yellow ball and for the best two scores to count from anyone.

Cost per team is £20.00 which includes Coffee & Bacon Buttie on arrival and prizes for the winners.

An official club handicap is required, either through submitting a valid handicap certificate from a previous club or by submitting 3 cards to Flaxby for handicap purposes; a Society handicap is not valid. A list of members with handicaps is available in the clubhouse. Please check that your name is on the list; if not and you wish to enter the competition, please speak to Iain Russell-Jarvie regarding your eligibility.

GUY RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS

Flaxby Park Golf and Country Club, the new 27-hole course located in between York and Harrogate, which opens on 1st July, has appointed Guy Wills as its club professional.

York-born Guy is returning to his roots after spending the last four years as a teaching professional in Germany, initially at Golf Club am Donnersberg and then Golf Club Schloss Miel near Bonn.

A former pupil of St Peters School, Guy began his golf career at Boothferry Park Golf Club in North Humberside before moving back to York to become PGA assistant professional at Fulford under the watchful eye of Bryan Hessay.

At Fulford he showed an early flair for teaching and was responsible for introducing the club's Junior section into the Golf Foundation, a charitable organisation which supports the development of junior golf.

In Germany he has continued to develop his teaching skills and in 2003 spent time working personally with the acclaimed coach David Leadbetter, later qualifying as a certified "David Leadbetter Instructor".

"I really enjoy helping people to improve their golf and enjoyment of the game," he said. "I'm looking forward to returning to Yorkshire and becoming head professional at Flaxby Park. It's a fantastic opportunity. Flaxby Park is going to be a great championship course with outstanding facilities."

Operations director, Ian Russell-Jarvie commented: "Our aim is to make Flaxby Park a centre of golfing excellence. Guy Wills is a young, highly motivated golf club professional with an excellent teaching pedigree who can help us achieve that aim."

The club's 18-hole championship course opens on 1st July, with a 9-hole academy course and 24-bay floodlit driving range opening in 2005. An associated four star hotel and spa is also planned for 2005.

The par 72 18-hole course is nearly 7,000 yards from the championship tees but offers tee positions for juniors as well as ladies and gentlemen. Interest in Flaxby Park Golf and Country Club, the new 27-hole course located in between York and Harrogate, has been so great that "membership full" notices have already been posted� - six weeks before it opens.
The club's 18-hole championship course opens on 1st July, with the 9-hole academy course opening in 2005. An associated four-star hotel and spa is also planned for 2005.
Operations director, Iain Russell-Jarvie, said: "We have been inundated with applications for membership in the last month and have had to start a waiting list. It's not surprising. The course is already looking fantastic and will be a real test of golf."
"We have restricted membership at the club to 350 because we want to ensure our members enjoy the course and all the benefits of golf club membership whilst still providing reasonable opportunities for visitors, guests of the hotel and corporate parties," he added.

Flaxby Park Golf and Country Club, a new 27-hole course located in between York and Harrogate, has exceeded its initial membership targets by more than 25% and is already taking bookings for corporate and society days.

Although the club's 18-hole championship course does not open until 1st July, with its 9-hole academy course opening in 2005, Flaxby Park is on course to have 300 members by the end of April. Five-day and Senior membership categories are already full and have been closed to new applicants.

Operations director, Iain Russell-Jarvie, said: "We have seen enormous interest in membership and also corporate golf days - the convenient location of the club adjacent to the A1M and the outstanding quality of the course design have been important factors in this success."

The club is offering full seven day membership for £550 per year (1 April to 30 March) and as a special opening offer is waiving the normal £550 joining fee for people who join by 30th June. Also, as the club does not open until 1st July, seven day members will only pay £412 this year.

FLAXBY APPOINTS HEAD GREENKEEPER

Since his appointment on 5th March, Danny Burrows has already achieved great changes to the course.

Originally from New Zealand, Danny recently moved to the north of England to be with his wife who is from Grimsby.

Danny served his apprenticeship at Wellington Golf Club and graduated from the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. Whilst working as Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Muswell Hill he reached the regional final of the student greenkeeper of the year 2003. At Muswell Hill he was involved in the re-design and construction of tees and contributed to the 10 year development plan for the course drainage.
